Recruiting talent

How should leaders recruit talent? It’s not easy—but can be made simple.

You’ll have had experiences where recruitment has been poor.

You’ll have had experiences where recruitment has been satisfactory.

You’ll have had experiences of working with good colleagues.

And if you’re lucky, you’ll have experienced new hires that are excellent.

So how do you find excellent new hires—consistently—that want to stick around.

Over the years, I’ve developed 12 guiding principles.

  1. Market yourself, attract better talent

  2. Judge every book by its cover (CVs too)

  3. Define—then refine your process

  4. Set expectations at the front door

  5. Hire for headroom

  6. Seek balance in behaviours

  7. Identify hidden talents

  8. Learn something from every candidate

  9. Swiss cheese challenge

  10. Less haste, reduce waste

  11. Follow your North Star

  12. God overboard with onboarding

What are your guiding principles for recruiting talent?
