Standards are easy to agree during planning. They become much harder to defend during delivery.
As projects progress, pressure inevitably emerges. Costs increase. Timelines tighten. Alternative solutions are proposed. Small compromises begin to appear reasonable. Each one can be justified in isolation.
This essay explores the tension between the standards that were originally agreed and the realities of execution. Drawing on experiences from the construction of a new manufacturing facility, it examines the role of leadership in maintaining clarity when others are pulling in different directions.
Because the purpose of a standard is not to guide decisions when everything is easy. Its purpose is to provide one version of the truth when compromise becomes tempting.
