20. The Cost of Compromise

Tuesday, 26 May 2026

Most organisations do not fail through a single catastrophic decision.

They decline through a series of small compromises.

A cheaper alternative. A reduced specification. A detail that can wait. A standard that is quietly lowered because nobody believes it really matters.

Individually, these decisions often appear reasonable. Collectively, they shape the quality of the organisation that follows.

This essay examines the hidden consequences of compromise and the tension between cost, speed and Excellence. Because while compromise can save money in the short term, it often creates costs that endure far longer than anyone anticipated.

The most expensive decisions are not always the ones we make. Sometimes they are the standards we choose not to uphold.
